A.C. Newman and Harriet at Echoplex, November 13, 2012

Echoplex was graced with a rather odd mix of folks last Tuesday for A.C. Newman of The New Pornographers and local band Harriet. A.C. Newman mentioned that it was his first time at Echo Park which I found quite hard to believe considering he did come from a wildly popular band that’s toured the world. Surely, they must’ve passed by Echo Park at least once? Nevertheless, it was a solid set showcasing his new release Shut Down the Streets. The crowd interaction was brief, but almost always funny. He has a very easy-going charm on stage that’s hard to ignore. With the help of his band, he brought his beautiful songs to life.

Harriet opened and proved that they’re a local band to watch out for. Alex Casnoff’s voice is one of the band’s main strengths which perfectly accompanies their brand of dancey, electronic with a tinge of Americana folk music. One of their songs even made use of some neat vocal effects which, though used sparingly, were effective. They’ve surely formed quite a following too with a big crowd turning up early to see them. If their set that night is any indication, then they have bigger things in store and we expect to see more of them in the near future.

Some of my favorite things are beef jerky, bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch, pistachios (aka the nut of the gods), my husband's face, and coffee.
