Reuniting a band after 15 years since their last show can be risky business. In the case of Failure, that risk paid off. On Thursday night the now three-piece made their comeback to a sold-out crowd at the El Rey Theatre. Prefacing their performance was a collection of clips from films that had influenced the band. The material ran the gamut of pop-culture to artistic to absurd, but meshed together perfectly. The final clip from Fantastic Planet instigated the most cheering (the band’s last release from 1996 shares its name with the film). Behind the film’s dialogue, a thumping rhythm and light spacey feedback began, followed by the screen dropping, revealing the band opening with “Another Space Song”. Fans stood beside themselves as Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards, and Kellii Scott seamlessly knocked out their songs, with hardly an inkling that nearly two decades had passed.
