Photos and review: Australia Rocks The Pier 2015

This past Thursday brought a ‘down under’ feel to the popular Twilight Concerts Series at the Santa Monica Pier as it was “Australia Rocks the Pier” night. In addition to the the usual assortment of activities and food vendors, the pier added in some Australian features with Garlo’s Aussie Meat Pies and many signs that read “G’Day USA.” It was all about strengthening the bond between Australians and Americans, as speakers and special guests, like Sid the Koala from Quantas Airline, took the stage in between musical acts to talk about everything from the aforementioned meat pies to other special event in Los Angeles. And as one of the speakers reminded everyone, it was nice that we were all standing by the ocean that “both countries share” to enjoy some quality music.

And the music was definitely the big draw as Australian artists Penelope Austin, DMA’s and Ben Browning of Cut Copy all rocked the stage. First up was Austin who graced the growing crowd with a beautiful set backed by DJ Saint Clair. Next up was DMA’s, a 6 piece band that grooved with everyone in front of a most spectacular sunset. The headliner was Ben Browning, a member of the popular band, Cut Copy, who was joined on-stage by his buddy, Gus. While Browning played the guitar and sang, Gus backed him up on the keyboard and drums. The set had a really groovy, electro feel, which the crowd loved. Remarking how wonderful it was to be playing under the stars on such a beautiful evening, Browning implored the audience, which was packed on both the pier and the beach below, to just feel good. And that everyone did.
