10 years ago Lawrence, Kansas’ The Get Up Kids laid to rest the songs that helped launch a whole new generation of bands. 10 years after that and they’re back at it. The Kansas five-piece took the stage at the Troubadour and acted as if they had remained together all this time, shooting comical looks at each other across the stage and whispering one-liners that only the band members could hear. While each has gone on to pursue other musical, it is always great to see these Midwestern boys get together and enjoy themselves.
From Worcester, Massachusetts, The Hotelier formed years after The Get Up Kids’ initial retirement, but the cross section of post-hardcore and pop punk that they helped establish can be heard in the young band’s songs. Their emotive lyrics, coupled with bright guitars and catchy hooks, bring to mind early shows of The Get Up Kids and their peers.
Also hailing from Lawrence, Josh Berwanger Band opened up with a set of brand new songs to be released on an EP later this year. With the full-length Strange Stains already under their belt, it’s great to see the group pushing forward with fresh material. While Berwanger came up through the ranks alongside The Get Up Kids in his former band The Anniversary, his perseverance in touring with new projects is a testament to his creative spirit, pushing forward in making new music.
