Popular Mechanics for the Heartbroken: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s Kip Berman

IMG_6102

Kip Berman was upset that he didn’t get to eat at Jollibee. The night of their concert here in Manila, Kip said he wanted to eat at Jollibee, which he referred to as an ‘amazing fast food restaurant.’ “I need to go to Jolibee. They opened one in New York [in Brooklyn]. It was a big deal. I see it everywhere here,” Kip gushes. But a day later, Kip dishearteningly tweeted that he didn’t get to eat at Jollibee. We would have thrown him a Jollibee party, to be honest. Complete with... Read The Rest →

It’s Hard Being a Being by Kat Medina

Kat, you’ve been doing art for how long now? I’ve been painting and making things since I was a kid but maybe around five years if you want to consider art-making in terms of formal learning. Why the delayed solo? When I was given a chance to do a solo show, I felt lucky but, at the same time, felt sheltered, and I wasn’t sure if I really had something to say, so I went out of my way to experience a bit of life. When I got laid off... Read The Rest →

Finales are usually soaked in tears, sandwiched in goodbyes and eulogizing. But Meiday refuses to be encased in such. Bidding us goodbye in its fourth year, Mei Bastes’s baby goes out with an 80s themed party that doubles as a shoot for Marie Jamora’s Cinemalaya entry Ang Nawawala. Expect big hairstyles, kitschy clothing and a slew of Madonna and 80s bands and film references (let’s hope there are those brave enough to go as the Village People). Meiday’s triumph will always be the resurrection of the flatlining local music scene.  Mei’s... Read The Rest →

Toro y Moi’s Jordan

2

Last month, Filipino fans finally got the Toro y Moi show they’ve been asking for. It started with a Facebook page created and managed by Bobby Benedicto and Kathy Gener. “We made it because we were planning on bringing them to Manila ourselves in June in line with their gigs in Japan and Korea,” Kathy said. “By that time, we had already emailed his booking agent regarding our offer and were exchanging emails. Sadly, we weren’t able to push through with it because of monetary constraints.” The Facebook page kept... Read The Rest →

Weeknight Memoirs on HD: John Torres

Untitled-1

John Torres is trying to break your heart. Most of the time he succeeds. His films leave cuts, bruises that remind you of extraordinary stories that you have once encountered and the futures that they promise. From his trilogy of shorts to his three full length features, John’s films are high-definition mirrors to his own world, meticulously personal but still embrace universality. For his next film, Lukas nino, which deals with the ordeal of a heartbreak, John will be crowdsourcing additional funds to make it. The film will be shot in... Read The Rest →

Sadness as a Religion: Attraction! Reaction! Death Cab for Cutie Night, February 18, 2012

Screen-Shot-2012-02-27-at-7.34.30-PM

The phrase "profound sadness" may be vehemently unbearable for some people but it seems to  have been invented for bands like Death Cab for Cutie. So as expected, Attraction Reaction's  Death Cab for Cutie night was a bittersweet blow to the skinny-jeaned crowd who all went through puberty quoting The Gospel According to Ben Gibbard and were  guilty of putting a Death Cab lyric as a blog bio or status update once or twice in their online lives.
